Personal data assistants (PDA's) have come a long way since Cartoon eBooks started in 2002. I use my PDA to remind me of meetings, anniversaries, play games, read books, plan projects, send email, read email, watch TV shows and give me directions when I am driving in my car. My PDA can do as much as my Laptop and desktop computers and more.

Reading books is not something that's really caught on, on desktops and laptops. But because PDA's are more portable than a book they are growing in popularly. Features like back lit screens so you can read in the dark, bookmarks, built in dictionaries, just click on the word and up comes the meaning, the list goes on.

The most asked question I get from authors is "will my eBook sell"? That's not an easy question to answer. But over the years I have found that books with the following points do sell.

• Your cartoon can not be on your web site for people to read for free if you want to sell books.
• One book does not sell as well as a series of books. Books in a series represent 98% of total sales each month at Cartoon eBooks.
• And the most obvious thing, it must be funny.

"So how does it work"? would be your next question. The electronic way of selling books is almost the same as selling books.

• You create your cartoons and submit them to the publisher.
• The publisher decides weather to publish the book or to pass.
• The book is created and submitted to the author. (if he has a PC or PDA. Sorry no Mac yet)
• The author approves the book
• The publisher uploads the book to the DRM server making it available to the 30+ eBook stores.
• The stores sell the books and pay the publisher who then pays the author.

Here are some extra advantages to having your book as an eBook.

• As the publishing process is all electronic the only cost in creating the book is time. Because of this Cartoon eBooks will take the time to publish a book if it feels it will sell. So with our standard agreement there is no upfront publishing fees and no ongoing stocking fees and we do not deal with any eBook store who does.
• Books are sold electronically. So sales of books can be seen with in a few days of the sale.
• Books can be added to the series quickly. and published on what ever day the author likes.
• When a book is published it is in the stores in about a week. It does depend on how long the store takes to pick up the book. On the Mobipocket site books are online instantly.
• All eBook shops compete for the customer. This is like a bricks and mortar store with only 1 or 2 other book shops in the mall. Every eBook customer can purchase an eBook from any of the always growing number of shops. And just like bricks and mortar shops they compete with price. Royalties are paid on the recommended price of the book. So if a shop puts the book on sale the author still is paid on the agreed recommended retail price of the book.
• Royalties vary depending on the recommended price.
• The retail price of a book can be changed and put on sale at any time.
• No large upfront printing prices.
• Customers have there books instantly. (depending on speed of there internet connection)
• Its much more cost effective to try a book as an eBook. Giving you information on how it would sell as a print book before making a printing commitment.

Something that has never really been a problem with a printed book is security. Yes you can give them away after you have read them or you can read them for free at your local library even photo copy part or all of them but that's not something you can control with print books.  Its very different with eBooks. When you think of a computer file everyone knows computer files can be copied and emailed to friends. This can be done with your eBook as well however the recipient will not be able to read the book. When an eBook is sold it is encoded with the serial number of your device which you have given the web site. The eBook then can only be read on your own PDA. The reader program will not open the book if the number of the book does not match the PDA that's trying to open it. Something the Mobipocket reader does better than other readers and is the most transparent to the customer. Other readers all you have to do is enter a number which is just the numbers of your credit card.
